The math assignment was to create your own word problem and then solve it using three different methods. The methods were elimination, substitution and Graphing. My word problem was: Emma bought 10 cakes and pieces total for her birthday. The cakes cost 8 dollars and the pies cost 18 dollars. She spent a total of 120 dollars. How many did she buy of each? I first solved the problem using elimination, then substitution, and finally graphing.
I chose to present this for SLC under my math assignments because I thought this project was more fun than math sheets and that you had to think outside of the box. This project also helped me memorize better how to use substitution, elimination and graphing to solve a word problem like mine. This project would fall under the Thinking and Problem Solving Skills from the 21st Century skills list because I needed to create a word problem and then solve it in three different ways. I created and solved a problem; everything falling under the category or Think and Problem Solving skills. This project shows my current growth because I solved a problem in multiple ways in which it wasn’t like following the same steps like on a worksheet. For this project I had to really think about how I was going to set up my equations and how I was going to solve them. This project also challenged me because I was having a hard time converting the word problem into y = mx + b formula to solve. If I was to do this project again I would have taken more time to work on solving with graphing before I started the project. I didn’t fully know how to solve that well using graphing but if I spent more time I would have a better understanding. |
