This slideshow is one of the most important parts of my senior project. For my senior year I am continuing my junior project, to teach the KCS students about proper sexual health. I am providing reproductive resources like pamphlets, flyers, and condoms. But this project is my basis, I created and will still work on to create a curriculum for the eighth graders (and hopefully the high school grades, if Mrs. Federoff doesn’t shut me down for being too provocative). I am most proud of the slideshow and all of the people who helped me create the slideshow.
The most challenging part is making the slideshow engaging while still getting my point across to middle schoolers. Many teachers and other students I asked about my slideshow told me there are too many words on each slide and I will need to cut it down because middle schoolers do not have long attention spans. So I have been working on adding more images and adding all of the necessary information in the speaker notes. This has been extremely difficult because all of the information is very necessary and I want to post my slideshows in google classroom so that KCS students can review it after my presentations. I also have been finding it hard to brainstorm ideas of how to present the information with physical items to make it more engaging while still being appropriate.
To improve this slideshow I need to work on reevaluating what information I want presented on the slides and what information I want to move to the speaker notes. I also need to learn how to present a touchy subject to pre-teens, where they will listen to me and I won’t be shut down by the board. If I was to start over I would choose a different theme for the presentation because many people have told me it's funny that it is ocean themed. This does not relate to anything I have learned in the past. I have had no classes on Sexual health nor have I ever taught sexual health. This is a whole new world for me and is my first time figuring it out. I feel very strongly about this topic and I want to pursue it more in the future. I don’t want to base my career on it but it is a mandatory requirement and out population is already too high for our Earth.
This assignment addresses the twenty-first century skill of civic literacy and engagement because the purpose of my project is to work with middle school students and my peers to teach them about proper sexual health. The entirety of my project is based on working with the community.
